19. Ford GT40

The GT40 is a high performance racing car that inspired the Ford GT. The GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four consecutive times, from 1966 to 1969. The vehicle provided Ford with the first overall victory at Le Mans for an American Manufacturer. The GT40 was originally built to win long distance sports car races against Ferrari. The name GT40 stands for Grand Touring and the 40 references the overall height of 40 inches. The desire to beat Ferrari stemmed from Henry Ford II having a feud with Enzo Ferrari. In early 1963 Ford was in talks to purchase Ferrari from Enzo, but he abruptly refused to sell when he learned that Ford would not allow Ferrari to compete against them in the Indy 500. Out of spite, Henry Ford II wanted a car that could dominate Ferrari on the track and the GT40 was born.
