4. 1961 Lincoln Continental
After the 1958-1960 Continental’s hideous design failed to capture consumer interest, and caused Lincoln a loss of $60 million dollars, Lincoln needed to make some changes to save the brand. With the 1961 Continental they did just that. Designed by Elwood Engel, the ‘61 Continental was a gorgeous machine with clean sides and a flat hood and trunk. This vehicle inspired a generation of muscle cars that emulated the look and the rear suicide doors added to the uniqueness of the Continental. The ‘61 Continental was the first car to be sold with a 24,000 mile or 2 year bumper to bumper warranty and was also the first post-war convertible sold by a major U.S. manufacturer.
