6. 1939 Lincoln Continental
The original Lincoln Continental was a prototype that was intended to be Edsel Ford’s personal vehicle. It is believed that he planned to put the vehicle into production all along if it proved successful. In 1938 he commissioned chief stylist Eugene T. Gregorie to design the vehicle for him. Allegedly Gregorie sketched out the design in an hour, using the Lincoln Zephyr blueprints as inspiration. The end result was an elegant convertible with a long hood covering a Lincoln V12 engine and long front fenders. These exterior designs became a trademark of the Continental. After the vehicle was finished it was delivered to Florida for Edsel’s spring vacation. After getting his friends interested in the vehicle, he sent a telegram stating that he could sell a thousand of them and the Continental was put into production.
