The Roadrunner was a muscle car produced by the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation starting in the late 1960’s. The overall trend at the time in American muscle cars was moving up market, away from their affordable roots, as they added more and more features. The Roadrunner was the first muscle car which aimed for performance while maintaining affordability. It was Plymouth’s performance vehicle. Though Plymouth already had a performance model in their GTX, they wanted to reinvent the muscle car into a performance model, effectively targeting two markets. The original concept was for a muscle car capable of running 14-second quarter miles and fall under $3,000 retail price. It achieved both those goals and that’s why the Roadrunner is an American classic.
