9. Automatic Braking

Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) was one of the best automotive innovations of its time and the automatic braking system that is being incorporated into some newer car brands is the next step in brake technology. Sensors on the of the vehicle utilize radar, video, infrared, or ultrasonic, to detect the vehicles proximity to other objects and in the event of the vehicle approaching an obstacle at unsafe speeds the system will override driver controls and apply the brakes to prevent a collision. Some systems will first trigger a warning light as the vehicle approaches the obstacle but once the vehicle passes a certain threshold the brakes will automatically be applied. This system can be deactivated by the driver should they not want to use it ( although I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want to take advantage of this technology) and the system shouldn’t be solely relied upon to stop the car, it is an assistant in the event the driver is distracted.
