7. 1987 Buick Regal Grand National Experimental
The Buick Regal Grand National Experimental (GNX) was hailed as Detroit’s last rear wheel drive hot rod. Buick partnered with McLaren Performance Technologies/ASC to crank up the power on the already beefy Grand National. The V6 engine under the hood produced 245 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of twist. The extra power came from a Garrett T-3 turbocharger and a large intercooler. The automatic transmission was reprogrammed to have more aggressive shifts, resulting in a zero to sixty time of 4.3 seconds. The blocky 2-door body made the GNX appear to be a standard Buick, but those in the know took one look at the GNX and knew better than to try and race it.
