The 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 was originally built as a Formula One racing car for the 1954 and 1955 racing seasons. Only July 12^th, 2013 it set a record for being the most expensive car sold at auction when it was purchased at Bonhams Goodwood for$29,600,000 USD. The car won a total of nine of 12 races that it was entered into, and it included the first use of the Daimler-Benz designed mechanical direct fuel injection and desmodromic valves. The fuel injection technology was an adaptation of the DB 601 high performance V-12 engine used on the Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter during WW2.
