6. The Driver’s Chevrolet Chevelle in Drive
For a movie about driving, the 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle is an interesting choice for Drive’s protagonist. It isn’t one of Chevy’s landmark models. It was too late for the muscle car era and arrived just in time for a fuel crisis and national speed limits. It wasn’t a particularly powerful car, in fact at the time it was seen as kind of a letdown from Chevy. But it’s a great ride for car-savvy protagonist with financial troubles and a mysterious past. Something about the Chevelle gives us insight into a character so mysterious we are never told his name. The Driver, as he is known, takes driving very seriously. We can assume his choice of vehicle was made purposely and with the utmost seriousness.
