While ranked as a small SUV, the Toyota Highlander is larger than many of the vehicles on this list. However, size has nothing to do with safety and this model has received top safety rankings in many ways. It missed getting honors from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety simply due to small overlap front crash tests, which received acceptable rankings. As we have already seen on this list, that’s an area where new small SUVs suffer, but acceptable is actually a high ranking compared to other vehicles.
