5. 2015 Honda Civic Hybrid
MPG City 44 / Hwy 47
The Honda Civic Hybrid get a respectable EPA estimated 44 mpg city and 47 mpg highway. Honda claims higher numbers, but the only way to achieve their claims is to drive the vehicle perfectly and slowly. The Civic Hybrid has a 1.5 liter water cooled i-VTEC engine that produces 90 horsepower and 97 lb-ft of torque coupled to a lithium-ion battery back. The DC brushless permanent magnet motor, which is placed between the engine and the CV transmission, provides an additional 23 horsepower and 78 lb-ft of torque. Because the electric motor is sandwiched between the engine and the transmission, both the electric and gas motors are always on. This reduces gas mileage compared to other hybrids which can operate solely on the electric motors for a time. Sadly due to disinterest from the American market, Honda will discontinue the Civic Hybrid after 2015, instead focusing on making more efficient gas engines.
