7. Ford Escape
The Ford Escape scored a “poor” in the small overlap front test, resulting in a low safety score. Driver’s space was seriously compromised. Upper intrusion measured as much as 25 cm at the hinge pillar and 20 cm at the instrument panel. Dummy measurements indicated injury to the left hip was likely, and injuries to the left and right lower legs were possible. The dummy’s head barely contacted the airbag due to the steering wheel shifting to the right, leaving the head vulnerable to impact with the side structure. The seat belt allowed excessive forward movement of the dummy’s head and torso. The side curtain airbag deployed, but did not have sufficient coverage to protect the head from contacting the structure.
